This brand new production of "SUNSET BOULEVARD" has been completely rethought by a new creative team. Robert Carsen, who has directed at every major opera house in the world and last year was responsible for Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical "The Beautiful Game" in the West End, will direct. Design will be by Rob Howell, whose credits include innumerable productions for the Royal National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Almeida Theatre, Donmar Warehouse and the Royal Court. Peter Darling will choreograph the production. His recent credits include the film "Billy Elliot" and the Olivier Award-winning productions of "Candide" at the Royal National Theatre and "Merrily We Roll Along" at the Donmar Warehouse. David Caddick, who has worked closely with Lloyd Webber on many of his musicals, will be the Musical Supervisor. "SUNSET BOULEVARD" has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black.
Set in the Hollywood of the early fifties and based on Billy Wilder's classic film, Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical "SUNSET BOULEVARD" is a compelling story of faded glory and unfulfilled ambition. While the stars relax by their palm-shaded pools, flamboyant silent movie actress 'Norma Desmond' is planning her return to the silver screen. Thirty years ago she was the biggest star of all. Now, with struggling screenwriter 'Joe Gillis' by her side, 'Norma' is ready to take her place in front of the cameras once more.
"SUNSET BOULEVARD" originally opened in London at the Adelphi Theatre on 12 July 1993. This production was seen by over 2 million people. The Broadway production won 7 Tony Awards and the show has subsequently been produced throughout the world.
"SUNSET BOULEVARD" is produced by Andrew Lloyd Webber's own production team, The Really Useful Theatre Company.
